Basic English Classes for the Afghan Community

From May 2023 to May 2024, the Settlement, Integration, and Language Project offered basic English classes tailored to the Afghan community, with funding support from Alberta’s Ministry of Immigration and Multiculturalism. Held every Saturday and Sunday, the program provided consistent and accessible learning opportunities for newcomers.

Designed to help participants acquire essential English language skills, the program focused on enabling individuals to navigate daily life and prepare for workforce entry. Over 300 Afghan participants attended the classes, benefitting from a structured curriculum that included personalized booklets, interactive discussions, and practical exercises to enhance communication abilities.

These weekend sessions not only addressed immediate language needs but also fostered integration, empowering the Afghan community to overcome barriers and build brighter, more confident futures in Alberta.
